Wavecrest have been host to a major French Film company, who are filming a
documentary called "Homo sapiens", the origins of man. All very exciting
actions sequences have been filmed in the forest on the history and are
intrepid pre-historic explorers being washed out to see in their primitive raft. |

More Excitement, the blue Horizons Adventure Company has arrived en, mass at
Wavecrest to follow and study the famous Sardine run. Included in the Party
is a high profile team from National Geographic, photographers, scientists,
and international eco-tourists following the road show. The evenings have been
fascinating with talks, lectures and audio presentations by internationally
renowned experts on dolphins, sharks, whales, even the originator of the famous
crittercam that is attached to a variety of interesting creatures such as sharks,
and allows the creature to photograph his life and lifestyle.
We have engaged Di, a qualified interior decorator to proceed through our rooms and raise the standard of each to an even higher level. Our guests love the results and they, like we, are anxious for her to finish the rooms and get on with the public areas. Once completed the total exterior will get a new coat. |

10 June 2004We mourn the untimely passing of Jasper, our very favorite horse. He together with Candy and Misty has only just been saddled and was so proud to join the rest of his team of horses, contributing to the happiness of our guests. Jasper was an amazing character with the personality that made everyone love him. Wavecrest will never be quite the same. Our consolation is that he had a wonderfully happy, short life, born in paradise, totally loved and spoilt, and even though he was ridden only a few times, just his presence happily playing on the beach with the rest of the heard, added to the happiness of the occasion for many. |
10 October 2004At last things are beginning to slow down a little. We must be doing something right, there just hasn't been an off season this year!?Di has almost completed the room interiors. Exterior painting and roof sealing proceeds next week. Wavecrest will look terrific by Christmas. Now all the real excitement... Michael Mount Waldorf from Johannesburg visited us last week on an "Eco-Venture" With heavy flooding and a fast out flowing Spring tide, and strict rules not that clearly understood, 3 little girls were washed out into a very angry sea. Launching conditions for our rubber duck were virtually impossible. Apart from huge surf, at low Spring tide there was simply no water. Wavecrest staff responded to the challenge. A team quickly assembled and carried the craft to the mouth. With Conrad at the helm, Sean and Donovan, a fellow student, hanging over the bow to raise the motors, we bounced over rocks and sandbanks and somehow the waves parted sufficiently to allow our launch. The 3 girls were rescued, the duck however got us safely into the mouth, then slowly sank. She is now undergoing serious repair and refitting for her seaworthy certificate. This may sound like a lame excuse to break our own rules, but we have now acquired a powerful jetski, for rescue purposes only, although we may be persuaded to take guests on fun rides out to sea. |
Flying NewsSo sorry, as a result of Conrad's health conditions he is no longer able to fly and we've had to say a fond farewell to EKM (our aircraft). Flying packages are still available from Dave Hart at 043 736 1663. |
Cabinet VisitorsOn Sunday 30 March, Wavecrest was delighted to host two Cabinet Ministers, Mr Valli Moosa and Mr Trevor Manual, together with our MEC Mr Enoch Godongwana, The Director General of Finance Ms Maria Ramos, The Editor of the Sunday Times, Mr Mike Robertson, together with several other dignitaries and journalists. They visited us as part of their Sunday Times Explorer Project. At the same time we had the valuable opportunity to discuss our mining threat, together with several of our other ideas for the advancement of our community. Our friends are encouraged to follow up on the editorial exposure that we hope to enjoy as a result, not to mention an article, possibly in the Sunday Times of 7 May, where the fruits of our lobbying may possibly be announced ? Keep a lookout on SABC Morning Live, The Sunday Times,. Der Welt, in fact just keep a look out ! |
Mercy FlightsWhile Conrad was away our aircraft kept herself busy doing mercy flights into Mozambique. We were pleased to see her on SATV News on two occasions, the cameras zooming onto her tail which proudly displayed the Wavecrest Hotel Logo. Well done ZS - EKM. |
New to the Wavecrest FamilyBorn to Roxy, a beautiful little foal, on 8th December 1999. We've called her Misty as that's where we found her first - lying in a little bundle in the morning mist. She, like all our horses, has become delightfully tame and plays with us on the lawn like the dog that she thinks she is. |

Getaway - July 1999 "The crowning glory of the Wild Coast - Once it was 4x4s and fishermen who adorned the beaches around Wavecrest Hotel. Now, come sunset, you're more likely to find crowned cranes dancing on the beach. Almost poisoned into oblivion a few years ago, Wavecrest's crowned crane population is back to a healthy flock of about 100 birds. Nationally however, the total tally is a paltry 2769, which makes them a highly endangered species." www.getawaytoday.com |

Earthyear - June-Dec 2000 Edition 21 "No more fish for the Wild Coast?" Conrad Winterbach, owner of Wavecrest Resort, offers the community an environmental course about marine life. "Once a villager completed my course they received a certificate and I then allowed them to collect my allowed quota, paying them above average rates, in return for them adhering to the terms of my course. Now it's all gone wrong, all respect is lost; it's a disaster… Only when people start to learn about their resource, when certification gives them pride in their work, will they begin to care for their orchard, and reap rather than rape, the bounty of the sea." |
